So we were a hundred children (kindergarten to CM2), students (mostly undergraduate), teachers and professors gathered to confront and share our techniques and to deepen the role of the class newspaper and high school. Surprisingly also had close links made between the intellectual and the manual; that is to say that any discussion, any discovery, confrontation is done on the workplace, while creating the text or during its layout … Nothing is done in the abstract, everything goes through the manual ; any desire to create is immediately performed by the creator himself. There is no division of labor resulting in dullness and automatic.

Each student, each teacher goes through all the stages of manufacture of the page: first create the text and the illustration ·, layout, composition, correction, to press and distribution. (*) Thus, no dead time, still work to be done. Around the work tables, on which were installed the full letters lockers, we learn to know each other .. and we spoke of our newspapers while deepening the knowledge and the technical use of the printing press.

From this work done in common, he emanated an atmosphere of friendship and sharing of experiences. Thus we were able to develop a congressional newspaper, where all texts composed during these three days, by large as by small gathered under the significant sign “Thousand Hands of Printers” … As for the text on the following page we only get the one last year’s newspaper and resume illustration, with much less spontaneity and imagination that the youngest.

The illustration is made with a fairly simple method: etching the design on a linoleum plate (linoleum for floors) with kinds of knives called “cutters”. I also began to tour printers, happy to help us when they can. I introduced all in my class 3rd, without rhetoric, but by showing a few pages printed during the Congress. I did not have to wait for the reactions: after a month is always the passion, we worked overtime without noticing.

This will, of course. Anyway, with the draw of the first text I found in the classroom the same moment of emotion that we all experienced with starting a newspaper, except that a printed page produces an infinitely more shock intense.

What I first hit is that, without any pressure from me (at least apparently), students immediately had a demand for perfection that I could get hurt – it’s my fault, I know – with limographe or mimeograph: it’s so beautiful that everyone feels the need for the page to be perfect: not a shell, a perfect inking a good justification the … most obvious negligence literally. From my side I am led to practice “ready for” ruthlessly, while lack of time – this is the common excuse – by weariness, but also because of poor technical means (eg Machine write to used characters), I let go often neglect the mimeograph.

A printing TAKES ON time. Another consequence is the class immediately saw that we can print only short texts. In the first trial the author had to immediately delete a few lines, more words.
